Adobe "Duo" for DVD creation: (a follow-up).

Adobe Premier Pro undoubtedly has much strength---it allows fairly ultimate control over every nuance of video editing. I find that it will take .wmv files and convert them to usable movies, as well as take .avi files and convert them to .mpg files (once you find the right buttons). What it DOES NOT LIKE to do, however, is edit .mpg files. It will (sometimes, reluctantly) but also jams up just as frequently. For all practical purposes, with an average-speed computer, you're best off editing the .avi files which come straight from your video camera. (these are DV files, mildly compressed). Edit them, then spit them out as .mpg (more compressed) files. Once you've completed that step, however, there's no easy going back.

Adobe Encore takes the .mpg files and lines them up. Add a menu (or two or three), another sound track if you want (e.g. a narration) and create your DVD. Sounds simple, but 'taint.' Too many aspects of this are non-intuitive, and no manual or online help REALLY tells you what's going wrong when it doesn't do what you want it to. I spend way, WAY too many hours and DVD blanks making what should have been a simple DVD. I can only assume that as familiarity makes its inroad, I'll get better at this. Adobe needs to line up Pinnacle's "front end" (user interface) engineer and take some lessons.) The Encore enginners need to go back to school, or to the womb---some place! I will say, once again, that the program allows you an immense amount of control.
